Maybe you could soak them in bleach? That could turn the brightness into a pastel yellow. But I'm not 100% sure that would work.

Since you only risking $5 shoes you never wear, paint away, paint them a solid color at first then you can experiment if you want. You can re-paint any mistakes,so no worries.
