I think that there is a bit if Leighway here as long as the shoes meet the task of being both functional and making you happy!

Well as long as they are shoes that can be used for excersize then I would think they are fine. However if they say you can't wear those tell them that the rules don't say you can't wear colorful shoes or you just didn't know. I've got in trouble for worse, my school busted me for wearing booty shorts.
