The key to successful weight loss is to have a healthy diet, NOT crash diets or blah diets, and stick to an exercise you like. For example, if you exercise on a treadmill and you hate using the treadmill, you're likely to stop using it after a few days. Personally, I like the elliptical better than the treadmill because it's more efficient and doesn't hurt your feet, and swimming is an excellent exercise as well.
