Who died and made you boss such that YOU have the "right" to stop the store people from doing their job?
They have to know if the item was damaged, so they know whether to put the item back on the shelf or whether it has to be claimsed out. Is that really such an inconvenience for you to tell them if the item is still good or not?
I work in retail. If you are returning this shirt because the seam is ripped, I need to know so we can write it up and send it back. If you are returning it because you don't like the color, or it doesn't fit right, then we can put it back on the racks.
Makes sense?
It makes it easier for them to either put it back as retail price or give a discount on it if something is wrong with it ????
